Admiralty House is a three-storey building of yellow brick facing Whitehall. It was built at the request of Admiral Lord Howe, the First Lord of the Admiralty, in 1782-3, seeking "a few small rooms of my own". Among its more illustrious residents included Winston Churchill, who served as First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911-15 and 1939-40. It remained the official residence of the First Lords of the Admiralty until 1964, and also served as the home of British Prime Ministers when 10 Downing Street was under renovation.

Admiralty House is part of a complex of former Admiralty buildings that includes the Ripley Building built in 1726, the Admiralty Extension built between 1898 and 1904, and the Admiralty Arch, built in 1910.
