Ak Yum
Cambodia
Ak Yum is the earliest known temple mountain of Angkor. It is located about on the southern bank of the West Baray, and can be reached by a dirt track. Taking the road to the West Baray, turn left and drive along the reservoir for about 400 meters. Ak Yum may be difficult to find.
Ak Yum is significant because it is regarded as the oldest Angkor ruin in the area. During the construction of the West Baray, which is located immediately to the north of it, parts of Ak Yum was built over. It is not certain which Khmer king built this monument. Stelae that were erected at Ak Yum were re-used during the reign of Jayavarman I. Similarly, the ruins as visible today was built over the original structure.
What remains of Ak Yum is not much to show. There is a central tower and four smaller towers, arranged in quincunx. All were built of bricks. As much has toppled over, it is difficult to make out how the temple once looked like.
