Angel Falls is the tallest waterfall in the world. Its native name is Kerepakupay Vená, but it is more commonly known in Spanish as Salto Angel. Although it was first sighted by explorer Ernesto Sanchez La Cruz, it got its name Angel Falls from James Crawford Angel, an American pilot on a mining mission who came across it in 1935.
The official height of Angel Falls was recorded by a survey conducted by the National Geographic Society in 1949. It was determined that the full height of the fall was 979m 3212ft), and the water dropped uninterrupted for 807m (2648ft). The mountain from which Angel Falls emerges is a tepui, a flat-headed mountain distinctive to that part of Venezuela. Angel Falls itself is located at Auyantepui, or "devil's canyon".
