Angkor Thom Victory Gate
Cambodia
The Victory Gate of Angkor Thom is one of the five gateways into the ancient Khmer city of Angkor Thom. The Victory Gate is the second most visited of the five Angkor Thom gates. It is at the end of the Royal Road that extends from the compound of the Royal Palace of Angkor Thom, where the Terrace of the Elephants are located, past the towers of Prasat Suor Prat, as the road leads eastwards in the direction of Thommanon and Chau Say Tevoda.
Compared to the South Gate, the Victory Gate is less well preserved. Nevertheless most of the stone elephants - Erawan - on each side of the gateway is well restored, and can be clearly seen in the pose of plucking up lotus flowers. The Victory Gate, just like the other gates of Angkor Thom, is topped by giant stone faces in the four cardinal direction.
