There are dozens of ruins which we have carefully documented, complete with photographs. You will explore the world renowned tourist sites such as Angkor Wat, as well as the obscure, less well-known ruins such as Kutisvara and Prasat Prei Monti. Angkor is the modern name given to the ancient ruins of the Khmer empire that flourished between the 9th and the 15th century AD. The name "Angkor" is a corruption of the Sanskrit word "nagara" meaning city. The Angkorian period is said to have started in 802 AD when Jayavarman II declared himself the "god-king" of the Khmers. The civilization lasted until 1431 AD, when the Thais invaded the Angkor capital, forcing the population to flee and move their capital, which eventually settled at Phnom Penh. Today the ruins of Angkor, located north of the town of Siem Reap, is inscribed by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. It is believed that there are well over a thousand Angkor ruins in the area, although only about fifty or so are of any particular interest to tourists. The biggest and most magnificent is Angkor Wat, one of the closest to the town of Siem Reap. The town of Siem Reap is the base from which to explore the Angkor ruins. At Siem Reap are accommodation to suit every taste and budget, as well as restaurants and cultural shows. The Angkor International Airport is located to the north west of Siem Reap and west of the Angkor ruins. The EarthDocumentary Google Map of Angkor allows you to precisely locate all the major monuments, temples, and other Angkorian ruins. Different sections of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom are also identified through this satellite imagery, so that you can now locate and identify the mammoth complex. You can scroll the map as well as zoom in and out to find all the locations identified. Associated Sites | |||
