Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge, Austin
Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge is a bridge in Austin, Texas. It crosses over Lady Bird Lake in the city. Originally, it crossed the Colorado River, but after Longhorn Dam was completed in 1960, it created a man-make lake which was named after the former first lady from Texas. The bridge was originally known as the Congress Avenue Bridge from the time the first crossing was erected in the late 19th century until 2006, when the city council renamed in honor of the late Ann W. Richards, the 45th Governor of Texas and Austin resident.
Underneath the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge is the world's largest urban bat colony. They are all Mexican Free-tailed Bats that spend their summers in Austin and winters in Mexico. According to Bat Conservation International, there are between 750,000 to 1.5 million bats living under the bridge each summer. The presence of these bats have made the bridge a tourist attraction.
