Armenia is a small country in Eastern Europe sharing a border with Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Iran to the south and Azerbaijan to the east. Armenia was once part of the former Soviet Union. Although a landlocked country, Armenia has Lake Sevan (Sevana Lich) which is the largest lake in the Lesser Caucasus mountain range. Armenia was the first country to adopt Christianity as the state religion, way back in AD301. Today there are many archaeological sites and numerous monasteries waiting to be explored. The capital of Armenia, Yerevan, is also one of the oldest cities in the world, established over 2800 years ago, during the time of ancient Babylon. Some places in Armenia are still closed to tourists, including the borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey, as well as the disputed regions of Nagorno Karabakh.
Armenia is a mountainous country, and 90% of it lies over 900m above sea level. The most pleasant weather is in spring and autumn, namely the months of May to June and September to October, when the weather is mild. Autumn is a particularly beautiful season in Armenia, when the countryside is filled with autumn colours. Summers have more extreme weather, being very hot in the day and very cold at night.
