Introducing LaGuardia
LaGuardia Airport (IATA: LGA) is the smaller, older international airport for New York City. It provides domestic air services as well as shuttle services to Boston and Washington, D.C.. The Marine Air Terminal is the terminal used by Delta Airlines for shuttle services to Washington D.C. and Boston. It is one of the oldest, still-in-use, airport terminals in the world.
LaGuardia is conveniently located for you to get to and from New York City. You can get there by using the following forms of transport.
Taxi
You can reach Manhattan by taxi for $20-$30 inclusive of tips and tolls. If you are going to Midtown or Upper East Side, ask the driver to use the Queensboro Bridge. That way, you save on tolls. Similarly, use Williamsburg Bridge to get to the Village and downtown, and Brooklyn Bridge or Manhattan Bridge for Lower Manhattan. If you're going to points above 72nd street, it is better to pay the toll and take the triboro bridge.
Buses
There are three city bus lines to LaGuardia. The M60 bus connects with the N and W trains at Astoria Boulevard, and crosses Manhattan using 125th St. It connects with the Lexington Line (4, 5, and 6 trains) at Lexington Avenue, the 8th Avenue (the A and C) and 6th Av. (B, D) Lines at St. Nicholas Av., and the IRT Seventh Avenue Express 2 and 3 at Lenox Avenue (officially called Malcolm X Boulevard), and Broadway (for the 1). This is a useful service if you are staying in Harlem, the Columbia University area or Hostelling International New York, as it goes south on Broadway (west side) to 106th St. The Q33 and the Q47 bus to Roosevelt Avenue/Jackson Heights connect to the E, F, G, R, 7, V.
For points downtown, use the Q33/Q47 and then the E. For points on the upper east side, connect to the 4,5,6 from the M60. For the upper west side, take the M60 and connect to the 2,3. For Morningside Heights/Columbia University, stay on the M60 all the way. For midtown/Times Square, the Q33/Q47 and then the 7 train or E train is the best option. (The 7 train is above ground through most of Queens, enabling visitors to see more of the city than the below ground E train.) For all buses you need $2 in coins or a Metro Card. There is a change machine in the airport terminal and Hudson News, the newsstand operator for LaGuardia, has some types of metrocards for sale.
Airport Shuttles
The LaGuardia Airport Shuttle connects the airport to Grand Central Port Authority, Penn Station, Bryant Park, and Midtown Hotels. Rates are between $12 to $15 per person.
Airport Bus
The New York Airport Express operates a service to Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station for $12.
Car Service
New York Airport Transportation and Transfers runs a Car Service to hotels, cruise terminals and other airports in New York. Although it is a more costly option, you pay a flat-fee inclusive of fare, tolls and gratuity. Also, there isn't a surcharge for waiting in case for flight delays, customs or luggage clearance. Additionally, there are no fuel surcharges or any other additional fees.
