Introducing Newark Liberty
The Newark Liberty International Airport, (EWR) is an international airport located to the west of New York City. In fact, it is in New Jersey. The airport has three terminals labeled A, B, C. Terminal C is the home base for Continental Airlines. Most of the international airlines use Terminal B while domestic flights use Terminal A. There are exceptions to this rule, so check on your terminal before you head for the airport.
There are a few transport options available.
Taxi
You can catch a taxi from outside the terminal. Just look for the 'Ground Transportation' and 'Taxi' signs. A flat fee is charged for trips to New York City. The dispatcher will write down on the taxi form the fare and your destination. For most places in Manhattan, expect to pay between $50 and $70, excluding tips of 15%-20% depending on service, and toll.
Train
You can take the AirTrain from Newark to reach the Newark Airport Train Station. The journey takes about 10 minutes. From there, you connect to a NJ Transit or Amtrak train that goes to New York Penn Station (34th Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan). The one-way fare is $15.00 on the NJ Transit Train and between between $20 and $30 on Amtrak. The NJ Transit train makes a few stops along the way. Stay on the train until you reach Penn Station, New York. The journey takes 30 minutes while waiting time is between 15 to 30 minutes.
Airport Shuttles
The Newark Airport Shuttle takes you to Grand Central Port Authority, Penn Station, Bryant Park, and Midtown Hotels. Rates are between $12 to $15 per person.
Airport Bus
The Airport Bus goes to Manhattan every 15 minutes. It costs $14 one way. It makes stops at Port Authority Bus Terminal, Bryant Park and Grand Central Station. The journey takes about 40 minutes depending on traffic.
Car Service
The New York Airport Transportation and Transfers arranges Car Services from Newark Liberty to the hotels and cruise terminals in New York City. Although more costly than other forms of transport, you pay a flat-fee inclusive of tolls and gratuity. There is also no additional charges for waits due to flights, customs or luggage delays, no fuel surcharges or any other additional fees.
Public Transit
The most inexpensive way to go to New York City from Newark Liberty is to take public transit. From the airport, take the New Jersey Transit bus No. 62. It is located in front of the terminals. The bus takes you to Newark Penn Station for $1.35. You may have the right change. Journey takes 25 minutes. From there, you can catch a subway train to Lower Manhattan for $1.75.
