Asia Budget Travel Guides prepares you to explore the biggest and most populous continent in the world. Asia covers 8.6% of the Earth's total surface area and 29.9% of its land area. It is home to approximately 4 billion people, or 60% of the world's current human population.
Asia occupies the landmass of Eurasia, with Europe to the western portion of it. The continent of Asia is defined as located east of the Suez Canal, eat of the Ural Mountains, and south of the Caucasus Mountains and the Caspian and Black Seas. It is bounded to the east by the Pacific Ocean, to the south by the Indian Ocean, and to the north by the Arctic Ocean.
The toponym "Asia" dates back to classical antiquity from a Greek word first attributed to Herodotus about 440 BC, when it was used in reference to Anatolia or, for the purposes of describing the Persian Wars, to the Persian Empire, in contrast to Greece and Egypt.
Due to its vast size, Asia has a huge range of different cultures, environments, historical ties and government systems. Japan has the largest economy in Asia, and the second largest in the world. In purchasing power parity term, however, the People's Republic of China has the largest economy in Asia and the second largest in the world.
