The Border Gates, at Portas de Cerco Square, were constructed in 1574 by the government of China, to separate it from Macau. It is a three-storey Chinese-style gate tower with specific opening times, and located in what became Ferreira do Amaral Causeway.

The old gate was demolished in 1871 and present Border Gates were rebuilt by the Portuguese Government. The present border crossing has 54 counters for travelers and 8 for vehicular traffic. In addition, the Lotus Bridge provided an alternative border crossing into into Zhuhai, mainland China.
