Brooklyn is one of the five boroughs of New York City. Coterminous with Kings Country, Brooklyn has 2.5 million inhabitants. It is the most populous county in New York State, and the second most densely populated county in the United States, after New York County, which is the borough of Manhattan.
Brooklyn was an independent city until it was made part of New York City in 1898. It is located on the westernmost point of Long Island, and shares a land boundary with Queens. Brooklyn's waterfront faces the East River in the north while middle Brooklyn adjoins Upper New York Bay. Buttermilk Channel separates Governors Island from the Brooklyn waterfront. Southwest is Gowanus Bay, connected to the Gowanus Canal. At its south westernmost section, Brooklyn is separated from Staten Island by the Narrows, where Upper and Lower New York Bay meet.
On Brooklyn's southern coast is a peninsula on which lies Coney Island, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach. The southeastern coast of Brooklyn lies Jamaica Bay.
