Central Europe is a region in Europe between Eastern and Western Europe. This region is usually used to mean the following countries: Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland. The countries are characterised by being a strongly Catholic area.
The countries can further be divided into two groups, Alpine countries including Switzerland, Germany, Liechtenstein, Austria and Slovenia and Visegrád group, namely Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. This definition is, of course, not precise, as most of Germany is not in the Alps, but rather, north of the Alps. And this holds true even for the most Alpine of the German states, Bavaria.
