The Charging Bull sculpture, also called the Wall Street Bull or the Bowling Green Bull, is a 3,200 kg (7000 pound) bronze sculpture that stands in the Bowling Green park, near Wall Street, in New York City. The statue depicts a bull, the symbol of aggresive financial optimism and prosperity.
The Charging Bull sculpture was sculptured by Arturo Di Modica. It was not commissioned by the city, however. Di Modica created it on his own, at a cost of $360,000. On 15 December 1989, he trucked it to Lower Manhattan, and placed it in front of the New York Stock Exchange building, as a Christmas gift to the people of New York. The police seized the illegally placed sculpture and put it in the impound lot. However, public outcry favouring the Charging Bull sculpture led the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation to install it, "on loan from Di Modica", at Bowling Green, facing Broadway, where it still stands.
In 2004 Di Modica announced that the Charging Bull sculpture is up for sale, on condition that the buyer does not move it from its location. He continues to own the copyright to it, and in 2006, sued Wal-Mart and other companies for selling replicas of the bull.
