Denver Budget Travel Guide helps you prepare for your vacation or trip to Denver, Colorado. In putting together this travel guide, I want to share useful travel tips for your visit. The places of interest in Denver are listed here for your convenience.

About Denver

Denver is the capital and biggest city in Colorado. With a population of 610,000 as of 2009, it is also the 24th biggest city in the United States. It is located within a metropolitan area with over 2.5 million inhabitants.

Denver is often known as the Mile High City, because it is located one mile (5280 feet, 1609 meters) above sea level. This, and the vicinity of even higher mountains, has an impact on its climate, which is classified as semi-arid continental. The average temperature in Denver is 50.1°F (10.1°C), although it drops to 0°C in winter. In summer in may reach 88°F (31.1°C). The wettest month in Denver are June and July while the driest is January.

Due to its located at the center of the United States, Denver is well placed as a regional transportation hub of the country. It has also become a popular location as the base for many large corporation that benefit from such a location.

Budget Travel to Denver

By Plane
Denver International Airport (DEN) is the ninth biggest airport in the world. It is located some 20 miles to the east of downtown Denver. Frontier Airlines, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines maintain a regional hub at Denver International, occupying Concourses A, B and C respectively.

Arriving at the airport, you have the option of renting a car, taking the taxi, or taking the skyRide buses. The buses offer five different routes to various places in Denver for a fare of between $6 to $10 one way.

By Car
You can drive to Denver on Interstate 25, 70 and 76. U.S. Highway 40 connects it to Salt Lake City while U.S. Highway 36 connects it to Boulder.

Budget Travel within Denver

As Denver is was a sprawling city, it is most convenient to explore it by car. Rental cars are available at the airport. You can also take the bus and light rail operated by the Denver Regional Transportation District.

  1. Black American West Museum & Heritage Center
    Museum housed in a Victorian home of the first female African-American doctor.

  2. City Park
    The largest park in Denver.

  3. Civic Center Park
    This is the cultural and political heart of Denver.

  4. Colorado History Museum
    Museum tracing the history of the state.

  5. Colorado State Capitol
    Gold-domed building housing the state legislature and governor's office.

  6. Denver Art Museum
    Seven story building housing an impressive collection of Western and Native American art.

  7. Denver Zoo
    Located within City Park, this is the 7th largest zoological garden in the country. It includes the world's largest outdoor Komodo dragon exhibit.

  8. Denver Museum of Nature and Science
    Museum with wide-ranging exhibits within the City Park.

  9. Larimer Square
    Site where Denver was first established, the square is today the commercial and cultural hub of the city.

  10. Lower Downtown (LoDo)
    A popular clubbing district of Denver, with many jazz joints and dance clubs.

  11. Molly Brown House
    Home of the flamboyant "Unsinkable Molly Brown" who survivied the sinking of the Titanic.

  12. Museo de las Americas
    Museum celebrating Denver's Hispanic population.
