The Dominican Republic, not to be confused with Dominica is a Caribbean nation that occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, with the remainder occupied by Haiti. Hispaniola is just one of only two islands in the Caribbean shared by two nations (the other being Saint-Martin/Sint Maarten). The Dominican Republic consists of 31 provinces, with the capital being Santo Domingo. In terms of tourism, the Dominican Republic has stunning beaches and mountain views, rivers, waterfalls and other natural sights.

    When to visit Dominican Republic

    The peak period for the Dominican Republic is from December to January. That is when prices are at their highest. For good weather, consider November or February, when prices are lower and crowds thinner. The rainy season runs from May to August, with the occasional hurricane happening during this period.

    Getting into Dominican Republic

    The main airport for the Dominican Republic is called the Internacional de las Américas (SDQ), located 18km east of Santo Domingo, the capital. Two other international airports are the Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP) in Puerto Plata on the north coast, and Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) in the east of the country. You may book airport transfers online from the Dominican Airport Transfers website.

    There is a US$10 tourist card to be paid upon arrival - this has to be settled in either US Dollars or Euro, the local currency is not accepted. When leaving, there is a departure tax of US$20 on most charter and scheduled flights. Check with your airline for the details.

    Nationals of US, Australia, Canada and Britain needs to get a Tourist Card that costs US$10.

    Money matters in Dominican Republic

    The currency is the Dominican Republic Peso (RD$) RD$1=100 centavos. Banknotes are in denominations of RD$10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 2000 while coins are available as 1 centavos, 5, 10, 25 and 50, and RD$1 and 5. Banking hours are from 8:00am to 3:00pm Mondays to Fridays and 9:00am to 1:00pm Saturdays.
