Esplanade Theatres on the Bay
Marina Bay

Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay is a major performing arts centre in Singapore. The Theates on the Bay are situated along Esplanade Drive fronting the Marina Bay and Elizabeth Walk, near the mouth of the Singapore River. Designed by the combined talents of two architectural firms, London-based Michael Wilford & Partners and Singapore-based DP Architects, the Esplanade takes the form reminiscent of the durian, a fruit popular in Singapore. It contains a 1,600 seat concert hall and a 2,000 seat theatre for the performing arts. On the third floor of the building is library@esplanade. Also located there, at the Esplanade Mall, are outdoor performing centres, and retail and food space outlets. There is an outdoor open space on the fourth floor of the building.

In June 1990, the Singapore government approved the decision to build a performing arts centre. The site chosen was the former "Satay Club" which has since been relocated to the Sembawang Shopping Center. A reclaimed site was chosen and architects from all over the world were invited to submit their designs.

The Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay opened on 12 October, 2002.
