Greene Street is a street in the Soho neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It is the heart of the Cast-Iron District of New York, so named because, as you walk through the five blocks of Greene Street, you will pass through some fifty cast-iron buildings. Most of these buildings were put up between 1869 and 1895.
As you explore this section of New York City, you will be able to admire 13 full cast-iron façades between Broome Street and Spring Street. The row between Nos. 8 to 34 is the longest row of cast-iron buildings. The finest, called the King of Greene Street, is at Nos. 72 to 76, seconded by the Queens, at Nos. 28-30. Many of the cast-iron buildings have today been converted into galleries.
How to reach Greene Street
Take the N, Q, R or W trains to the Canal Street subway station. Walk west on Canal Street until you reach the intersection with Greene Street on your right.
