Greenwich Village, also called simply the Village, is a residential area on the west side of downtown Manhattan, in New York City. It was named after Greenwich, London. Greenwich Village is today home to celebrities and many young adults.
Greenwich Village is bounded by Broadway on the east, the Hudson River on the west, Houston Street on the south, and 14th Street on the north. The neighborhoods surrounding Greenwich Village are the East Village to the east, SoHo to the south, and Chelsea to the north.
The street layout of Greenwich village does not match that of Manhattan's more formal grid plan. The area west of Greenwich Avenue and Sixth Avenue were allowed to retain its street pattern as they were already built up when the grid plan of 1811 was implemented. As a result, Greenwich Village has street layout that are totally different from the rest of Manhattan. Many of the streets here are narrow and some curve at odd angles. Moreover, most of the streets here are named rather than numbered. Nevertheless a few formerly named streets are now numbered, although they don't conform to the usual grid pattern when they enter the neighbourhood.
Greenwich Village is regarded as the centre of bohemian culture in New York City. Its neighbourhood is characterised by its colourful, artistic residents that propagate an alternative culture. It is not surprising therefore that Greenwich Village is often the birthplace of new movements and ideas, whether political, artistic or cultural.
