High Museum of Art is a leading art museum in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. It has a permanent collection of over 11,000 works of art, including 19th and 20th century American art, European art, decorative arts and African art. Of particular interest are the artworks by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Claude Monet, Dorothea Lange and Chuck Close. The High Museum of Art was founded in 1905. It was originally known as the Atlanta Art Association. In 1926 Mrs Joseph M. High donated their family residence on Peachtree Street to the museum, and the museum was named High in honor of the family. In 1955 a new museum building was opened adjacent to the original High house. Following that, the Atlanta Memorial Arts Center opened in 1968. The art center also serves as a memorial to 106 Atlanta arts patrons who were killed in an air crash at Orly Airport in Paris, on 3 June, 1962, while on a museum-sponsored trip. Space at the High Museum of Art increased doublefold in 2002 when three new buildings designed by Renzo Piano were opened. Between October 2006 and 2009, the High Museum of Art showcases hundreds of paintings and sculptures from the Louvre of Paris, including many art pieces never before seen in the United States.
