Holy Infant Jesus Statue
Prague, Czech Republic
The Holy Infant Jesus of Prague is a famous statue in the Church of Our Lady Victorious. The origin of the statue can be traced to the beginning of the 17th century, when it was brought into Bohemia by a Spanish princess, who in turn was given the statue by her mother, Maria Manriquez de Lara of Spain. The statue was eventually given to the Discalced Carmelites in Prague and set up in the oratory of the monastery. Devotions were performed before it twice a day, but it stopped during the Thirty Years War.
In 1631, the army of King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden invaded Prague. The Swedes were Lutheran Protestants. They threw the statue into a pile of rubbish behind the altar, and there it remained for seven years until rediscovered in 1637. Since then, it was reinstalled, and began to draw devotees from around the world. Claims of blessings, favors and miraculous healings have been attributed to the Infant Jesus.
