The Holy House of Mercy, or Santa Casa da Misericórdia, is the oldest social institution in Macau. It was founded in 1569 by Bishop Dom Belchior Carneiro, the first Bishop of Macau, following charity organisations already existing in Portugal at that time. At that time, there was much hardship and suffering, and the Holy House of Mercy lend a hand to widowers and orphans of sailors who died at sea.

The Holy House of Mercy is built in the neoclassical style, and located at Largo do Senado, the main square of Macau. Its façade is richly ornamented. Columns and Pilasters create a passageway for pedestrian traffic to move on the ground floor. The entire building is painted white, except for its granite pedestals.
