The John Street Methodist Church is a church located at 44 John Street in Manhattan. It was built in 1841, making it the oldest Methodist congregation in North America, starting on 12 October, 1766, when a Wesley convert, Philip Embury preached to five persons at his home. It was regarded as the first meeting of the Methodist congregation. The present church building is the third church located at the site. In 1768, the Wesley Chapel was dedicated on John Street. In 1771, the most important figure in early Methodist church in America, Francis Asbury, preached his first sermon there. In 1784, following the formal split between the Methodists in America and the Church of England, the Wesley Chapel was renamed the John Street Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1817, the chapel was replaced with another church building, which stood until 1841, when the present building was erected.
