Lincoln Memorial is a memorial built to honor Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. The memorial is located at the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

The Lincoln Memorial was designed like an ancient Greek temple by Henry Bacon, who also was the sculptor of the Abraham Lincoln statue inside the memorial.

The idea to construct the Lincoln Memorial goes back to 1901. After several bills proposing the memorial were defeated, the sixth was approved in 1910. The choice of site was on the Washington Monument-Capitol Axis. It overlooks the Potomac River. The area was already earmarked in the 1901 McMillion Plan for the placement of future monuments comparable to the Washington Monument.

The Neoclassical design of the Lincoln Memorial by Henry Bacon did not sail through unopposed, as many felt it was too ostentatious. Nonetheless the general opinion favored the design. The statue of Abraham Lincoln was originally planned to be 10 feet tall. It was enlarged to be 19 feet, so as not to be dwarfed by the grand scale of the memorial chamber.

Construction work began on 12 February, 1914, and work progressed steadily. Even as the project was under way, changes had to be made and modifications carried out to the original design. Nonetheless, the Lincoln Memorial was completed within schedule, and it was dedicated on May Day in 1922 by Commission president William H. Taft, who presented it to President Warren G. Harding, who accepted it on behalf of the American people.

The Lincoln Memorial was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places on 15 October, 1966.
