Little Rock is the capital as well as biggest city in the state of Arkansas. The name is derived from a small rock formation on the southern bank of the Arkansas River. The city has a population of 192,000 people, with a metropolitan population of 685,000.
The area around Little Rock has seen evidence of Native American habitation going back thousands of years before the arrival of the first European settlers. The place was reportedly named la Petite Roche, which is Little Rock in French, by explorer Jean-Baptiste Benard de la Harpe.
Little Rock experiences a humid subtropical climate. The warmest months are July and August, when the average high temperature reaches 92.8°F (33.7°C). The coldest month is January, when average low temperature goes down to 30.8°F (-0.7°C). April and November are the wettest months with over 5.47 inches (138.9mm) of precipitation.
The Little Rock National Airport (LIT) is the main gateway to the city with flights from American, Continental, Delta, Southwest, United and USAirways. Your transport options out of the airport includes the taxis, shuttles, limousines, rental cars and city buses.
You can also reach Little Rock by taking the Amtrak railway. The Texas Eagle train going between Los Angeles and Chicago has a stop at Little Rock. However, you will reach the city late at night.
Little Rock can also be reached by road. The Interstate-40 and Interstate-30 are the main highways.

The most convenient way to move about in Little Rock is by car. There are car rentals at the airport. Otherwise you will have to depend on the public buses, operated by the Central Arkansas Transit Authority. The bus fare is $1.35 for each journey. If the bus is your main means of transport, get the One-Day Pass for $3.75 or Adult 10-Ride Card for $11.50.
