About Lübeck

Lübeck is a city in northern Germany. It is the second largest city in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. The city is a major port, but attained the height of its glory in the 14th century, when it was the most powerful member of a trading bloc known as the Hanseatic League.

Lübeck is located on the Trave River. The Old Town is on an island surrounded by the river. It remains the biggest German port facing the Baltic Sea. The city has a population of 211,000 and covers an area of 214 sq km. Due to its significance during medieval times, Lübeck has numerous heritage buildings of Brick Gothic architectural style. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site entitled the Hanseatic City of Lübeck in 1987.

Budget Travel within Lübeck

The Old Town (Altstadt) of Lübeck is best explored on foot. Most of the sights are within walking distance. Additional tourist information can be obtained at the City Hall (Rathaus, on Breite Straße) or at the visitor centre opposite Holstentor.
