Luxembourg Budget Travel Guide provides you an insight into the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, one of the smaller countries in Europe. Through this travel guide, I want to describe to you the places of interest in the grand duchy and provide you with details for visiting it.


About Luxembourg

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a small, landlocked country in Western Europe. It is bordered by Belgium, France and Germany. The country has a population of half a million people within an area of 2,586 square kilometers. The capital and largest city is also called Luxembourg, or Luxembourg City.

Today Luxembourg is the only sovereign Grand Duchy. It has a modern, highly developed economy, and one of the highest Gross Domestic Product per capita in the world. The country is a founding member of the European Union, NATO and the United Nations. Its capital continues to be seat of several institutions and agencies of the European Union.

Luxembourg was founded in AD 963. it became a Grand Duchy in 1815. The kings of the Netherlands were also the Grand Duke of Luxembourg until 1890, when the Dutch throne passed to the daughter of King William III, Wilhelmina. At that time, there was an act in Luxembourg requiring the sovereign to be male, the title of Grand Duke of Luxembourg passed to a distant cousin, the Duke Adolphe of Nassau. The present Grand Duke of Luxembourg is Henri.

    The most practical way to reach Luxembourg is by train. Luxembourg is two hours from Paris and three hours from Brussels. You can also drive to Luxembourg using the A6 motorway from Brussels, A3 from Metz and A1 from Trier.
