About Luxembourg

Luxembourg was founded in AD 963. it became a Grand Duchy in 1815. The kings of the Netherlands were also the Grand Duke of Luxembourg until 1890, when the Dutch throne passed to the daughter of King William III, Wilhelmina. At that time, there was an act in Luxembourg requiring the sovereign to be male, the title of Grand Duke of Luxembourg passed to a distant cousin, the Duke Adolphe of Nassau.
