Macau International Airport (MFM), or Aeroporto Internacional de Macau in Portuguese, is the main international gateway into the former Portuguese colony of Macau, now a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.
The airport was open in November 1995, while Macau was still under Portuguese rule. The airport's runway was built on a strip of reclaimed land in the sea, adjacent to Taipa Island where the passenger terminal and air traffic control facilities are located. Causeways connect the runway to the parking apron.
Macau International Airport is designed to handle 6,000,000 passengers a year, and up to 2,000 passengers per hour. The airport does not close at night, and can operate around the clock. Despite its small size, Macau International Airport is able to handle Boeing 747s, which is used for cargo services between local manufacturers and the overseas market.
