Manly is a well known suburb of Sydney located 17km northeast of Sydney's central business district. It is most famous for Manly Beach, whcih consists of three sections, from north to south namely Queenscliff, North Steyne, and South Steyne. Not far from Manly Beach is Fairy Bower and Shelley Beach. Adjacent to Sydney Harbour National Park, Fairy Bower is one of the few large wave surfing spots in Sydney and produces a long right hand wave breaking over a reef.

The name "Manly" was given by Capt. Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of New South Waves, to the indigenous people living there, saying "their confidence and manly behaviour made me give the name of Manly Cove to this place". The people mentioned were men of the Kay-ye-my clan. While looking for a source of fresh water in the area, Phillip encountered members of the clan, and after a misunderstanding he was speared in the shoulder by one of them. To his lasting credit, the progressively-minded Phillip ordered his men not to retaliate.

Today Manly Beach is highly popular with tourists and locals alike; a popularity rivalled only by Bondi Beach south of the harbour.
