Nachi Waterfall, at 133 meters tall, is one of the tallest waterfall in Japan (some say the third tallest). Located in Wakayama Prefecture, it is part of the Kii Mountain Unesco World Heritage Sites, and is the start of the pilgrimage trek of Buddhist monks to Koyasan. One of the sacred sites of Japan, Nachi Waterfall is related to the Kumano faith, and was mentioned in the Chronicles of Japan as the burial spot of Izanami-no-Mikoto. Located at the base of the waterfall is the Nachi Taisha Shrine, a shrine to Japan's Shinto religion. The shrine is dedicated to the kami, or spirit, of the waters. Close by is the 7th century Tendai sect temple, the oldest temple in this area of Japan. ![]() Entrance to Nachi Waterfall. ![]() Nachi Taisha Shrine. ![]() View of Nachi Waterfall. ![]() Another view of Nachi Waterfall. |
