About Nantes
Nantes is the sixth largest city in France. It is located in western France, on the banks of the Loire River, just 50 km to the Atlantic coast. It has a population of just over 800,000 people.
The history of Nantes goes back to pre-Roman times, when there was a Gaulish tribe here by the name of Namnetes which established a settlement in the area around 70 BC. The Romans occupied the area in 56 BC, at which time the settlement became known as Portus Namnetus.
Nantes was voted by readers of L'Express as the greenest city in France in 2003 and the following year it earned the title of "best place to live" from the weekly Le Point. The city enjoys a temperate climate of cool winters and mild summers.

The public transport operator in Nantes is the Transports de l'Agglomération Nantaise, TAN, which operates its trams and buses. A single journey costs €1.50. Once on board, you have to validate your ticket on the validation machine, which gives you an hour of ride with unlimited transfers. Tickets can be bought in packs of ten for €12. In addition, you can also buy daily 24-hour passes which costs €4.00 for one person and €6.50 for a group of four.
