North Khleang is one of two ruins in Angkor Thom called Khleang. Although it appears to be symmetrical to South Khleang on the other side of the road, the two buildings were not built at the same time. North Khleang is older than South Khleang. It was built in the late 10th to early 11th century, during the reign of King Jayavirvarman. We know that because inscription mentioning Jayavirvarman was discovered there.

North Khleang is located just behind the towers of Prasat Suor Prat. The style of construction came to be known as the Khleang style, and is also applied to describe Ta Keo and Phimeanakas.
