About Norwich
Norwich is a city in Norfolk. The city includes suburban areas such as Costessey, Hellesdon, Old Catton, Sprawston and Thorpe St Andrew. The area south of Norwich was the site of the Roman settlement of Venta Icenorum, which fell into disuse around AD 450. After the Romans abandoned the area, there were a number of Anglo-Saxon settlements that grew to the north of the River Tas. One of these settlements became a thriving city by the 10th century. However a raid by Swein Forkbeard the Viking in AD 1004 put an end to it.
The town of Norwich itself is said to have been established between AD 924 and 939. It was a mint, and coins bearing the word Norvic appeared across Europe. By the Middle Ages, Norwich has turned into a centre for the wool trade. Its city walls were completed by the middle of the 14th century. It enclosed an area which is larger than the City of London.
By the early part of the 20th century, Norwich was still a major manufacturing centre, producing shoes, clothing, wire netting among others. It was also a brewery and a chocolate producing centre. The city suffered heavy bombardment during the Second World War. Today it has the feel of a small town that is a little past its prime. There are a number of tourist attractions in the city related to its glorious history.
