It was granted its city charter in conjunction with the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Queen Victoria in 1897, and is known officially as the City of Nottingham.
In Nottingham today you can come across many beautiful historical buildings, some dating from the 12th century. Many of the most elaborate buildings in Nottingham were built in the 19th century. They are the work of prominent architects such as Alfred Waterhouse, Thomas Chambers Hines and Nottingham's own Watson Fothergill.
