Old Tin Hau Temple of Coloane is one of the three temples dedicated to the goddess Matsu in Macau. The other two are the famous A-Ma Temple in Macau peninsula and another in Taipa.

The goddess Matsu is a deity that is worshipped mostly by fishermen and seafarers, for protection on their journey out into the sea. Like many Chinese deities, it is personified by a real person, in this case, a young woman by the name of Lin Moniang. Matsu is worshipped throughout the southeastern coast of China, as well as in Taiwan, Vietnam and Malaysia.
