Patpong is the name of adult entertainment district of Bangkok. Although there are red light district in almost every town and city in Thailand catering to the needs of the local population, Patpong caters mostly to foreign tourists and expatriates. Lately however, a touristy night market has taken over much of Patpong. Prices here are significantly higher than at night markets elsewhere.
Patpong comprises two parallel streets located between Silom Road and Surawong Road. The name Patpong is derived from the name of the family that developed it, the Patpongpanich family who are ethnic Hainanese Chinese from Hainan Island, China. They developed the streets that is today known as Patpong 1 and Patpong 2. The district has since expanded to include streets not owned by the Patpongpanich family. Soi Jaruwan, often nicknamed Patpong 3, Silom Soi 4 and Soi Kathoey, caters to a gay clientele. Nearby is Soi Thaniya, which has expensive bars catering exclusively to Japanese men.
