Introducing Poitiers

Poitiers Budget Travel Guide provides useful travel information for people who are planning a trip there. You can find here a list of all the places of interest in the city with brief description of each.

About Poitiers

Poitiers is a small city on the Clain River in France. It was founded by Celtic Pictones tribes before Roman times. During the Roman era, a big amphitheatre was built here which is larger than the one at Nîmes.

For much of its history, Poitiers served as an army base due to its central and strategic location. As a result of that, it was heavily bombed during World War II, particularly the area surrounding its railway station. Until the late sixties, there was a strong US military presence in the city.

Today the city is slowly transforming into a tourist destination, particularly for local tourists. The city centre is quite picturesque with streets that still bear historical structures.
