Queen Elizabeth Walk
Queen Elizabeth Walk used to be a seafront promenade. During colonial times, the British spent their afternoons strolling or playing cricket. All that is changed now. Although Queen Elizabeth Walk is still a shady, tree-lined promenade, since the sea was reclaimed to form Marina Square, Queen Elizabeth Walk - which was also built on reclaimed land - now partly overlooks the Esplanade Theatres on the Bay. Where there is still a seafront, what is visible is the new Esplanade Bridge and the newly created Marina Bay.
Queen Elizabeth Walk is located on Esplanade Park, which was created in 1943 to provide a little greenery to the Civic District of Singapore. Queen Elizabeth Walk itself got its name in 1953 in celebration of the coronation of the queen.
Prior to the creation of Esplanade Park, Queen Elizabeth Walk was lined with a row of European houses which are now gone. In its place are a few historical monuments including the Tan Kim Seng Fountain, the Cenotaph, the Indian National Army Monument and Lim Bo Seng Memorial.
