Introducing Rennes

Rennes Budget Travel Guide is written to introduce this city in France to those who are interested to pay it a visit. I want to share with you travel information to help you go there. Listed are the places of interest that you might want to visit.

About Rennes

Rennes is a city in Brittany, on the northwestern part of France. It is located at the confluence of the Vilaine and Ille rivers. The city has a population of slightly over 200,000, and acts as the provincial capital of the region of Brittany.

As with many cities in France, Rennes traces its history back to pre-Roman era, when the ancient Celtics established their settlement here. In those ancient times, it was known as Condate. Later, during Roman era, it became known as Condate Riedonum.

Today only a small part of the medieval city survives. A big fire in 1720 burned for six days and destroyed much of the city. What remained was "taken care of" during World War II, first from three German airplanes that hit an ammunition train, killing a thousand, and later by heavy bombings by US and British Air Forces, causing casualty of a few more thousand.

Since 1954, Rennes has developed extensively, becoming the third fastest growing city in France after Toulouse and Montpellier.
