Saarland is a small state on the southwestern part of Germany. With a size of only 2570 sq km, it is the smallest of the Flächenländer, federal states which are not city-states like Berlin, Hamburg or Bremen.
Saarland is sandwiched between Luxembourg and France on one side, and Rhineland-Palatinate on the other. Its capital is Saarbrücken, a city of 180,500 inhabitants.
Saarland did not actually come into existence before World War I. For much of history, it comprised several small territories that lived independently, threatened on occasion only by France. The French Revolution put an end to the independence, when Saarland was made part of the French Republic. The fall of Napoleon in 1815 caused it to be broken into three parts.
Following World War II, Saarland came under French occupation. The French had much desire for the coal-rich territory, but did not manage to annex it. Even as the other federal states of the newly created Federal Republic of Germany were formed after World War II, the position of Saarland was undermined by French claim to it. The state was only established in 1956 following the Saar Treaty, which allowed Saarland to become part of the Federal Republic of Germany. The entry of Saarland was known as the "small reunification", or "kleine Wiedervereinigung", to compare it with the reabsorption of the former states of East Germany.
Saarland enjoyed the highest economic growth in GDP among the German states in 2005. It derives its income from the automobile industry, steel industry, coal mining, ceramic industry, computer and information industry.
