San Alfonso del Mar Resort at Algarrobo, Chile, has the biggest and longest swimming pool in the world. The pool is 1013 metres (3,324 feet) long and covers an area of 8 hectares (19.77 acres). The idea to create this resort came as far back as 1997, when Chilean real estate developer and biochemist Fernando Fischmann, wanted to create a revolutionary resort. The motivating factor to create such an immense pool was the Pacific Ocean itself. The waters of the Pacific Ocean coast of Chile is cold, unclean and dangerous, so Mr Fischmann wanted to create a place for people to swim and enjoy water sports in a comfortable and safe environment. Rather than creating just another small swimming pool, he wanted something totally extraordinary.

It took years for Fischmann to realize his dream. It was only in 2006 that he found the technology to maintain the water quality and clarity at a low cost. The new method uses 1/100 the amount of chemical required to treat water using the traditional methods, but the results speak for themselves.

The San Alfonso del Mar swimming pool was completed in December 2006 using a new technology in water treatment, filtration and chlorination. The water is pumped in from the Pacific Ocean and treated before being pumped into the pool. The water temperature is kept at 26°C. It is 9°C warmer than the ocean, allowing it to be used on cold days. San Alfonso del Mar is created by the founder of Crystal Lagoons, Chilean real estate developer and biochemist Fernando Fischmann.

Location of San Alfonso del Mar Resort

San Alfonso del Mar Resort is located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, just north of the town of Algarrobo. See the Google Map below. It is about 90km from the Chilean capital, Santiago.

To reach San Alfonso del Mar, take the 4-lane toll-motorway, Route 68, which connects Santiago and Valparaíso, to the north of San Alfonso del Mar. Exit the motorway at Casablanca, and take the highway connecting Casablanca to Algarrobo. Exit the highway at Aguas Marinas, without entering the city of Algarrobo, and proceed towards San Alfonso del Mar.

Another way to reach San Alfonso del Mar is to take the Autopista del Sol, the motorway that leads to the city of San Antonio, south of San Alfonso del Mar. Connect to the coastal highway and drive north from San Antonio to Algarrobo. The coastal journey takes about 20 minutes.
