Science Museum Tourist Info

The Science Museum on Exhibition Road, South Kensington, is a major London tourist attraction. It is one of the museums that make up the National Museum of Science and Industry, with the others being the National Media Museum, and National Railway Museum

The Science Museum museum was founded in 1857 with the collection of the Royal Society of Arts and surplus items from the Great Exhibition. Initially it was tied to the South Kensington Museum, the precursor of the Victoria and Albert Museum, but was spinned off in 1858 to be known as the Museum of Patents, and renamed in 1863 as the Patent Office Museum. In 1885, the Science Collections of the South Kensington Museum were renamed the Science Museum while the Art Collections became the Art Museum, which subsequently became the Victoria and Albert Museum nearby. The Patent Office Museum was then merged into the Science Museum in 1909.
