The Seaport and the Civic Center district of Manhattan is where the state and federal governments' court systems as well as the city's police department are located. This district of Manhattan was the heart of the newspaper publishing business in the 1880s. Today, it is an area of imposing architecture with landmarks from the different periods of Manhattan's history. Among the noted buildings in this neighborhood includes the Woolworth Building, the 19th-century City Hall and the 18th-century St Paul's Chapel, which is the oldest building in New York City in continuous use. The Seaport area used to be called the "street of sails" in the 19th century. That is because many sailing ships were moored there. When sailing ships became unprofitable, the seaport area also went into decline. Today, the area has been restored and is home to a museum, boutiques, shops and restaurants. One of the most well-known landmark of the area is Brooklyn Bridge, which is located to the north of the Seaport and Civic Center. Getting thereTake the 7th Ave / Broadway 2 and 3 trains to Park Place or Fulton St.; the Lexingon Avenue 4, 5 and 6 trains to Brooklyn Bridge; the 8th Avenue A and C trains to Chambers St and the R or W trains to City Hall. You can also reach it by bus nos. M1, M6, M9, M15, M109 or M22.Sights in this areaBuildingsChurches Parks & Squares [an error occurred while processing this directive] |
