SoHo is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan. It is bounded roughly by Houston Street on the north, Lafayette Street on the east, Canal Street on the south, and Varick Street on the west. The name SoHo is short for "south of Houston Street", and is totally unrelated to the district called Soho in London, England. As a result of SoHo, other new neighbourhoods also adopt the same way of naming itself, including TriBeCa and DUMBO. Before reinvented into a trendy locale, SoHo was known simply as the Cast Iron District.

Geography purists insist that SoHo's borders consist of Houston Street to the north, Canal Street to the south, Broadway to the east and West Broadway to the west.

The area where SoHo is located was at one time earmarked for the construction of two enormous elevated highways, two branches of the LOMEX, the Lower Manhattan Expressway. The highway was intended to create an automobile and truck through-route connecting the Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges on the east with the Holland Tunnel on the west. At that time, the 19th century cast-iron structures were not highly valued. However, through the efforts of local leaders, the highway project was abandoned.

The abandonment of the highway project allowed a large number of historic buildings in SoHo to be preserved. Many of these buildings attracted artists who valued the space for their large areas, and the large windows for admit natural light, as well as the rental which was then low. The upper stories became known as lofts. Many of these were illegally used for living space, though not zoned or equiped to be residential space. This zoning violation continued for a long period of time, when the economy of New York City was depressed. Since then, and especially since the 1980s, SoHo began to draw more affluent residents. It resulted in the gradual departure of the artists in the 1990's, leaving in their wake galleries, boutiques, and restaurants, and filling up the space left behind are young urban professionals.
