St Lazarus Church was built on the site of the Hermitage of Our Lady of Hope, also called São Lazaro, in 1570, for the benefit of lepers. The leper settlement was then built to outside the city walls of Macau. The settlement was transferred to D. João Island in 1882, and then to Coloane in 1947. The present St Lazarus Church dates to 1895. It underwent restoration in 1966.
