About Sweden

Sweden is the biggest country in Scandinavia, and the third biggest in area within the European Union. Although the country is 450,295 square kilometers in size, it only has a population of 9.2 million people. A quarter of the Swedish population is concentrated within the metropolitan area of Stockholm. 85% of Swedes live in cities and towns, with the percentage of those living in the country continuing to decrease. The majority of the population is also found on the southern half of the country, with the northern part of Sweden being sparsely populated.

Sweden is a peaceful country which fought its last war in 1814. It is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government.

Despite its location in the northern latitude, Sweden still enjoys a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. This is due to the Gulf Stream that allows Sweden to enjoy a warmer, somewhat drier climate than other places at a similar latitude. Nevertheless, along with other countries in Scandinavia, it experiences colder climate when compared with the other countries in Western Europe at a lower latitude.

There is a wide variation in average temperature among the different cities in Sweden. On the whole, the warmest month is July while the coldest is January. The temperature for Stockholm in July is 12-20°C while in January, it is between -1 to 2°C.
