Texas State Capitol, Austin
Texas State Capitol is a National Historic Landmark in Austin, Texas. It is the largest, but not the tallest, state capitol building in the United States.
The Texas State Capitol was built in the Italian Renaissance Revival style and was built between 1882 and 1888. The cornerstone was laid on 2 March, 1885, on Texas Independence Day. Its original architect, Elijah E. Myers, designed it in 1881, but was dismissed in 1886, before the building was completed. The total original cost of building the Texas State Capitol came to $3.7 million. Central air conditioning was installed in 1955. The building underwent refurbishments in 1997.
The Texas State Capitol has 500 rooms and covers an area of 8.5 acres (3.5 hectares). The central dome is 300 feet (92 meters) tall. Beneath the dome is a rotunda with the official seals of Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederacy, and the United States - the six nations that have, at one time or another, ruled the state.
