Thuringia, or by its full German name Freistaat Thüringen, is a small state in central Germany. It has a size of only 16,171 sq km (6244 sq miles) and about 2.3 million inhabitants. It borders on Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt to the north, Saxony to the east, Bavaria to the south and Hesse to the west.
Thuringia is very much a forested state. The Harz Mountains forms the frontier separating it from Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. In the south, the Thuringian Forest (Thüringer Wald) is densely covered with spruce, beech and oak. Tourists come to Thuringia to explore its many medieval castles and charming small towns. The capital of Thuringia is Erfurt, the oldest and biggest town in the region. The town of Eisenach with the nearby Wartburg Castle, is the birth place of Johann Sebastian Bach.
