About Toulouse

Toulouse is a major city in France. The city has a population of around 440,000 people, making it the fourth biggest city in France behind Paris, Marseille and Lyon. It is also the 5th largest metropolitan area in the country after Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Lille.

Toulouse is located 590 km from Paris, near the border with Spain, is perhaps best known as the headquarters of the aircraft manufacturer Airbus. It is also home to the European aerospace industry, the SPOT Satellite system and the Toulouse Space Centre.

Toulouse experiences an oceanic climate and is close to a humid subtropical climate. The warmest months are July and August, when average high temperature reaches 27.5°C (81.5°F). Coldest month in January, when average low temperature drops to 2.2°C (36°F). May, with precipitation of 77.2 mm (3 inches), is the wettest month in Toulouse followed by April and June.

Budget Travel to Toulouse

Toulouse Blagnac International Airport (TLS) is the main international gateway to the city. From the airport, you can take a shuttle bus to downtown Toulouse for €5.00. The same journey by taxi costs €20.00.

You can also ride the TGV high-speed train from Paris to Toulouse in 5 hours, or regular trains in 7 hours 30 minutes. Bordeaux is two and a half hours away while Marseille is 4 hours away by TGV. To buy cheap TGV tickets, go to the iDTGV website.

Budget Travel within Toulouse

It is possible to explore downtown Toulouse on foot. This is the best way to see all the sights. To cover greater distances, you will need to take the metro and bus. The local public transport operator is Tisseo.


Places of Interest in Toulouse

  1. Basilique St-Sernin
    The largest Romanesque basilica in Europe, built in the 11th-12th centuries.

  2. Canal du Midi
    Canal connecting the Garonne River to the Étang de Thau, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  3. Cité de l'Espace
    Space park with two planetariums and interactive exhibits.

  4. Fondation Bemberg
    16th century palace housing the collection of local art lover Georges Bemberg.

  5. Georges Labit Museum
    Museum exhibiting Asian art and Egyptian antiquities.

  6. Hôtel de Ville
    The Toulouse town hall, located in the heart of the city, surrounded by shops and cafés.

  7. Les Abattoirs
    A centre of modern and contemporary art, housed in the former abattoir.

  8. Les Jacobins
    The first Dominican convent that became the founding institution of Toulouse University.
